27,700 Aussies voted in Dymocks’ Kids Top 51 books for 2017. And *drum roll…* the most popular book for kids in 2017 WAS NOT Harry Potter!
I know, it’s shocking, right? For the first time in 3 years, the boy wizard wonder was knocked off the #1 spot… by a very hungry little caterpillar who made some rather questionable dietary choices:
Australian classics are still popular!
Aussies clearly treasure home-grown picture books. 18 Australian authors featured in the list of 51, including Jackie French, Hazel Edwards, Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton (we’re slowly working our way up to owning the entire Treehouse collection!), John Marsden and Alison Lester.
I was chuffed to see that my personal all-time favourite Australian picture book made the cut: There’s A Hippopotamus On Our Roof Eating Cake.
How many favourite kids books do you have in your house?
We have 26 out of the 51 books in our house right at this moment. Most of the others I’ve read to the kids at some point, or they’ve come across elsewhere.
The Wonky Donkey has been a massive hit at kinder for at least 6 months now (we even own the CD for that one!). Pig the Pug featured large in my eldest son’s first year of school – alongside Pig the Winner, Pig the Star and all the other Pig books.
Kids are discerning readers. They love something new as much as we do, which means that the Dymocks’ Kids Top 51 is changing every year. There are 14 books which made the list in 2017 that didn’t appear at all last year!
